Word crashed and left me with only a .tmp file how do I view it?

I was working on a Word document and the program crashed. This has happened
before and I am able to work with a recovered version of the document. This
type I had to shut down the crash/recovery window. So all I have is a .tmp
file that Word can't read. Is there a way to read the contents? I have used
the notepad to open the file but most of the file is scrambled.
