Word Crashes After Trying To Import EPS File

Jay

Hello all --

I have read through some topics already in this forum regarding eps
files and word 2004. However, my problem is a little unique, so any
help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I created a number of eps files with TIFF previews in another
application (namely, Matlab). On my Windows machine in my office, I
can open Word, insert the .eps files (with these TIFF previews), and
voila! A low grade view of the image that prints beautifully on any
printer! It's like pure magic!

Now, I took the same file home with me and did some work with it on
Word 2004 for Macintosh. I needed to import another .eps file (with a
TIFF preview) into the file. When I go to Insert -> Picture -> From
File and then click on the .eps file, a little Graphics Converter box
pops up and then Word crashes with a huge error message. This happens
for EVERY .eps file I have (so it's not like one file is corrupted or
something). I have no idea why I am able to do the insertion on
Microsoft Word XP (Windows) and not Microsoft Word 2004 (Mac).

Any help or insights would be so appreciated. Thanks so much.

Jason :)

That's what should happen on your Mac too.

You mean Lemkesoft's GraphicConverter?

I just tried doing it exactly as you describe, except I used
Omnigraffle in place of Matlab, and it worked like a charm. The preview
was a bit pixellated on screen but it printed perfectly.

If I opened the test .eps in GraphicConverter and saved it as eps after
answering its PDF dialog and then imported that into Word, I got a
horrible preview and a better, but still pixellated print. No crash

There is a bit of black magic with eps formats for Mac and Windows
being slightly different. I know you said every eps crashed Word, but
is there something in common with them?

Would you like to mail me a non-sensitive sample? I'll see if I can
reproduce your crash. My sig explains how to delete 'nospam' and
replace it with elliott for an e-mail 'addy' that works.

Hi Jay ,
We are investigating this issue . It would be very helpful if you could mail
the word file and the EPS file to me at (e-mail address removed)
Thanks a bunch,

Hi Priyanka.
I was waiting to hear back from Jay. He sent me the file that crashed
his Word 2004, and it crashed mine too. I used the crash report
mechanism to send you guys the details.

There was nothing terribly secret about Jay's crasher, so expect a mail
from me shortly.

Other programs, like OmniGraffle and Freehand dealt with his eps more
or less properly.

If you would like me to repeat any experiments, I'd be happy to oblige.
Word's handling of eps is one of my least favourite features. Rather
than perma-bitching I'd better do something positive eh?
