It is not unusual for one user account to experience a problem since each
account maintains a separate set of Preferences & a separate Normal.dotm
template. That's the first direction to look. You'll find information here
on how to go about testing the problem user's specific files:
http://word.mvps.org/mac/MacWordNormal.html
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DamagedPrefs.html
If neither of these measures correct the problem it is possible that the
problem user account is experiencing font issues. Reply with your results
for additional suggestions.

Word crashes after using bullets
Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel
We are three users on one computer. One of us has problems when using bullets
in Word. After using the icon for bullets the document closes itself and gives
this message number 089998590. It is strange since the other two users have no
difficulties with bullets. Has anyone experienced the same problem?

That's likely to be corrupt Preferences or a corrupt Normal Template.
That's likely to be corrupt Preferences or a corrupt Normal Template.
Word stores the most recently used Bullet and Numbering formats in the
document, the Normal Template and in the Preferences. It is possible to
customise bullet and numbering formats so they are internally inconsistent.
If you do, Word will crash when you use them.
Once a document's bullets and numbering corrupt, trying to use bullets or
numbering in that document will crash every time. To cure that, you need to
Maggie each document the crashes happen in:
The Maggie:
1. Create a new blank document
2. Carefully select all of the text in the bad document EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark
3. Copy it.
4. Paste in the new document.
5. Save under a new file name and close all, then re-open.
This technique for de-corrupting is known as "Doing a 'Maggie'", after
Margaret Secara from the TECHWR-L mailing list, who first publicised the
technique.
You also need to de-corrupt the preferences and Normal Template in that user
account so that documents you create in the future do not have the problem.
1) Track down all instances of pre-2008 Normal template on your computer,
and drag them to your desktop. The file is called simply "Normal" and has
no extension.
2) Find and drag the file Normal.dotm to your desktop. Unless you have
moved it, it should be in
/Users/~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/
3) If the following files exist, Remove or rename them:
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (11)
4) User/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist
5) User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 (the whole folder!)
6) Then Repair Permissions with Disk Utility.
Be thorough with this, if you leave any of the old files behind Word 2008
will find them and will not replace them. Do it right and Word will construct
a new, clean, set of preferences and everything should now work.
Hope this helps
