Word Crashes and has display problems after latest update

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Since the last update, Word is acting strangely. When I start a new document and then save it for the first time, once it is saved, it displays not text but little boxes. The font still shows as the same font, but the display is the rows of little boxes that we have all seen at times :) Also, any other documents open at this time also no longer display text. I am using Print Layout view.

The same thing happens when I open an attachment in an email.

When I try to adjust anything at this point, Word simply crashes.

This has just started happening since the latest update.

Thanks for any help.

Most likely the update is merely coincidental. It sounds more like an issue
of font cache corruption. To find out Quit Word then shut down the Mac for a
few minutes. When you start up go directly to the OS X app called Font Book
to check for Edit> Reslolve Duplcates. You might also select all (Cmd+A) in
the list of fonts & run File> Validate to see if there are any problem
fonts. [That may take a few minutes.] If any are found to have problems
other than being duplicates you might want to turn them off.

See if things improve when you launch Word. If not, try the troubleshooting
steps here for manually clearing the font cache:

If thins don't improve post back with your results - damaged Preferences or
a corrupt Normal.dotm could be the culprit.

The first steps you suggested resolved the issue. Thanks. As a new Mac user I am still learning!

Glad it was that simple :) For future reference, if you're in the habit of
leaving Word (or most any program) launched constantly it's a good habit to
break. Most any program works best if you restart it at least once a day...
And OS X is no exception.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Thanks, Bob. I will keep that suggestion in mind. As a former Dell tech I know to listen to those with experience!
