Word crashes each time when saving a document

We have a serious problem on two computers, running Office XP under
Windows 2000.
It is impossible to save documents in Word: Word simply quits each time
we want to save a document.

And nothing seems to help: reinstalling Office didn't help, starting
Word with winword /a doesn't help, the only workaround is saving in
rtf-format, which usually (but not even always) works.

Has anyone ever encountered this problem?

Are you trying to save to removable media?

Thank you for your reaction, but this is not the cause of the problem.
We simply save to the hard disk, with lots of space.
