Word crashes even after applying all the solutions

i've tried all the solutions of deleting the old pref. files and whatnot. I even cleaned out every last trace of my old 2004 files. But word still crashes at startup for me - more or less.

I pin pointed on the file that gives me the trouble:

com.microsoft.word.plist

whenever i delete that file, Word works, and continues to work if i don't change any of the settings within it, but if I do, i can't restart Word again without it crashing.

Any ideas on how to solve this problem of mine?

as strange as this could be, after battling with this problem for weeks, I find the solution a few minutes after posting here.

But I think the problem is unique to me, and those who tweak their OSs a bit.

Looking at the error report, though knowing nothing about it, i noticed something about the Core Graphics, and it instantly hit me that I enabled Quartz GL (by default, its turned off due to its known instability) in Quartz Debug. I turned it off, and voila, Word starts as usual.

I believe its instability, or Word's, makes a bad pair when Quartz GL is used to draw Word's graphics.

I'd like to see if anyone else would be experiencing this trouble.

Maybe a program called Appzapper will help -- it deletes every file
installed by an installation. You can download a working demo for free.

With all due respect, I'd be very careful with the use of that application
-- Back up your system *first* and follow directions *explicitly*. There
have been a number of reports about AppZapper going through your HD like
Grant through Richmond.

Thanks for sharing this fix!

Do you happen to remember whether you ever enabled Quartz GL while you
were running Word 2004, and did you see the same problem?

chris.

I, too, have experienced a very similar problem. I have tried every solution I could find, from checking every font for corruption, to deleting preference files, running Disk Utility and updating everything I can.

This problem suddenly appeared last week. I simply tried to open a new document and after about a minute and a half, the spinning beach ball showed up, my computer froze for a moment and then Word crashed. It provided an Error message with an error report, which is all Greek to me.

As for your suggestions, I don't know anything about Quartz GL, and I did also delete the com.microsoft.word.plist file. But that did nothing to solve my problem. I have scoured the 'net for more solutions, but it seems my problem might be unique, although it sounds a little similar to yours.

Does anyone know what else I can do?

We need your software versions to answer, please post a new question so they
come through.

And "very similar" in not exactly the same. There are several very similar
issues, so give us an exact description of yours so we can hopefully answer
correctly in one attempt.
