Hi

Could anyone help me figure out how to prevent word 2004 from crashing
every time i try to cwyw in endnote 9? i've already tried taking out
the files in word's startup file. of course, endnote doesn't show up in
word's toolbar, so i haven't solved anything. a friend hasn't
encountered this problem, so maybe it's some peculiarity with my own
computer?

please help, have got a dissertation due soon

Thanks,

Sabiha Ahmad

Hi Sabiha,

Definitely something with your computer. :)

See the EndNote troubleshooting FAQ, and if anything applies:
http://endnote.com/support/faqs/CWYW/MacWord.asp

From your description, this one sounds most likely to me:

See if it helps.

General advice: turn off Instant Formatting, so that you see the EndNote
fields instead of the formatted citations. That seems to be less
problematic on the Mac.

Side note: even without CYWY in Word's startup folder, you can insert
EndNote references using drag and drop or copy and paste between the library
and your document. So you don't need to have it in the toolbar, until you
are ready to format the bibliography. Even then, you can simply tell
EndNote to scan the document instead of using the toolbar within Word.

Good luck on the dissertation.

Thanks for the prompt and thorough response.

I tried removing the files listed on the endnote troubleshooting site,
but am still getting the same error messages with lines of
incomprehensible text with "VBE" sprinkled throughout. So I guess it's
a Visual Basic Execution problem or something along those lines? Anyone
have any replacement code for the CWYW macro?

Hi Sabiha,

There is no replacement code for the CWYW macro--however, as I said in my
previous message, it is entirely possible to have the benefits of EndNote
without ever using CWYW. Check EndNote help for a topic something like
"using word processors that aren't MS Word". All the tricks listed here
also work if you *are* using Word. That should let you get work done in the
meantime.

Could you cause the problem one more time and jot down the error messages to
post, or perhaps take a screenshot of them and post it somewhere that we can
see them?

Did EndNote 9 ever work on your computer? Is this a sudden problem, or
something that arose the first time you tried to use it?

I'm guessing here, but to see if VBA is having problems in general:

Can you also look on your hard drive, and make sure that there is a Visual
Basic for Applications icon in Applications:Microsoft Office 2004:Office ?

And, can you go to Tools | Macro | Visual Basic Editor and see if you get
any error messages? It should switch you into a new window/3-pane layout
(use Word | Close and Return to MS Word to get back)

Offline for 48 hrs, but others may chime in, I'll be sure to look for this
thread.
