Word crashes frequently

My wife has been experiencing frequent Word 2004 crashes in 10.5.8 and often losing unsaved work. It happens at various times such as switching between applications or simply typing into the document, i.e. it is not related to a specific action such as saving the document. I recently performed maintenance on her computer to see if it would solve the problem (checked disk, repaired permissions, deleted caches, etc.), and it seemed fine for a couple of days but the crashes have started again. I'm not sure if this helps with troubleshooting, but here is what is in the Console log at each instance of the crash:
10/28/09 3:49:34 PM ReportCrash[9993] Symbolication warning: Unable to locate CIE at 0x6a64132b = 0x00000008 - (0x959becd9 + 4)
10/28/09 3:49:34 PM ReportCrash[9993] Symbolication warning: error parsing FDE at 0x00199700 in:
__TEXT [0x00000000 - 0x001d8000) __eh_frame [0x001996f8 - 0x001c9de0) /usr/libexec/oah/translate
10/28/09 3:49:34 PM com.apple.launchd[97] ([0x0-0x4b44b4].com.microsoft.Word[8722]) Exited abnormally: Segmentation fault

I know there are many posts similar to mine and I've looked through several but did not see anyone post this particular error message. I'd be grateful for any help, thanks.

One thing you don't specify ‹ and isn't indicated in the crash log ‹ is what
the current update level of Office happens to be. If it isn't at 11.5.5 that
may be the problem.

Yea, sorry I forgot to mention that, but yes, I try to keep up to date and it is 11.5.5. Any further suggestions?

I agree with Bob:

That type of crash normally results because one or more modules of the
software do not match up correctly.

Try running updating from Help>Check for Updates.

Same thing happens for me. The program crashes once or twice per day. I use
it a lot. I notice that it crashes more if I use track changes and have
figures and equations in the document. The program is completely unstable in
Leopard. I have much better luck when I run it in a windows emulator
(Parallels). In the emulator, Word is snappier and never crashes. It is such
a headache using it in Leopard. I've had to reconstruct entire paragraphs or
math derivations over again because the recovery didn't even work and it
hadn't been autosaving like it was supposed to be... Totally frustrating.

Did you ever hear about a possible solution? Did the microsoft guys give up

Joe,

Read other threads here over the weeks and months and you'll notice that
tracking changes is the root cause of many problems. Word seems to have
many flaws in this area.

To avoid debugging what is probably not debuggable, can you simply turn
of change tracking and get on with writing?

If you must keep track of old versions (not a bad idea), copy the files
into different file names or folders. Or use Time Machine.

Or "Compare Documents" when you have finished changing the file.

Keep the unchanged version, complete your edits, then use Compare Documents
to mark the changes! Easy... And no crashes :)

Cheers

I am having the same problem -- except that it also always seems to happen
when I try to print a document. I am totally up to date, have Leopard
10.5.8, Word 2008, and have tried all of the usual fixes as well. And I
don't use track changes.

I print to several different printers at home and at work and have had this
happen with all of them at least once.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Erika

You mean: Your problem is nothing like his? :)

He's on Word 2004, in OS 10.5.8, using an Intel. His crash is during
editing, yours is on Print.

Are you using EndNote? If so, disable CWYW and the crash may go away.

Cheers
