Word crashes, leaving behind multiple .tmp files

I am running XP and using Word 2003 (part of Offce SBE 2003). My problem is
the Word will crash numerous times while I am working, recovering the file
and making changes to the Normal template. I also notice that there are
multiple ~.tmp files being created but not closing when this happens; they do
not close upon exiting Word, either, and have to be manually deleted. I have
tried creating a new Normal template but this hasn't solved the problem. I
have also tried turning off the auto save and that hasn't solved the problem,
either.

If you have an answer for this one, I'm all ears because this problem is
wasting so much of my time I'm ready to switch to Open Office just so I can
get my work done.

Mostly likely a bad printer driver or an incompatible third party add-in.

Well, after reading the article and trying all solutions offered, I am still
having this trouble. It seems that no one can figure this out as it is a
problem that I have tried repeated to find a solution for.

The only thing that I am wondering about now is could this be the result of
installing upgrades as opposed to the original/full install of the current
Office Suite. I started way back when with Office 95 and have upgraded
continuously. I would like to stop sending so much of my money to Mr. Gates
if I can help it.
