Word crashes on launch, suspect mpoai9.dll

Word opens, a windows installer box launches, and word
crashes. I have Windows XP OS, Office XP containing Word
2002.

When I log on as a different user, Word will launch but
gives an error message about mpoai9.dll is not an add
in. This file is a Mappoint file which I deinstalled a
trial copy a long time ago.

I contacted Microsoft and we deleted all Mappoint
references in the registry and reinstalled Office, to no
avail. Any help appreciated.

It's sounds like you were thorough, but just to be on the safe side....

Make sure the following registry key is gone:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MapPoint

Also, do a search for mpoai9.dll and rename it to mpoai9.old

Try starting Word using the /a switch: go to Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

If Word starts then check for COM add-ins using the following steps:

- Right-click any toolbar and select Customize
- On the Commands tab, select the Tools category
- Locate COM Add-Ins on the right
- Drag/Drop to a location of your choice
- Close the Customize dialog box and use the COM Add-Ins command to
determine if Word is still attempting to load the MapPoint DLL.
