Word crashes when enter AutoText in Form Field

I have a user with a laptop running Office XP on Windows
XP who experiences Word crashing whenever he enters
AutoText into a form field. The form field is in a Word
document that is protected.

Any idea what might cause this?

Hi Liela,

Well, since it's not possible to insert AutoText into a
protected form field, he should simply stop trying...

Normally, Word wouldn't crash under these circumstances,
but display an error message. You might try Help/Detect and
Repair, just to make sure anything that's damaged is put
back in shape. But the user can simply stop trying to
insert the AutoText.

I'm not sure why you say it's not possible to insert
AutoText into a protected form field. We do this all the
time.

Perhaps I'm not being clear. Let me try again.

We have Word documents that have been set up with Text
Form Fields. The document is then protected so that users
tab through and only fill out information where the form
fields are placed.

When a user tabs to a form field, they can type the first
few characters of an AutoText entry and the screen tip
pops up allowing them to press enter to complete the
entry.

In speaking with the user, I was advised that he can fill
out form fields in this manner but sometimes Word closes
on him when using AutoText in a form field. There is no
pattern to a specific AutoText entry or Word document.

Ah, AutoComplete. I was thinking Insert/AutoText, which is
not available.

That makes it difficult to trouble-shoot, of course.
Especially if you're not getting ANY error message
information at all. There are a few things you can try, but
no guarantees any will help:

1. Run Help/Detect and Repair

2. Rename Normal.dot to NormalOLD.dot (Word will generate a
clean copy of Normal.dot)

3. Replace the graphics and the printer drivers (just in
case one of these has been damaged)
