word "crashes" when i open documents with specific fonts

hey all,

for a while, my word program has been working fine.

then all of a sudden, it's been crashing lately.

after trial and error, i have kinda narrowed it down to a reason why.

just to explain, i created two test documents: test1.doc and test2.doc

test1.doc had text written in times new roman.

test2.doc had text written in myriad pro.

test1.doc worked fine, as did some older word files that have times
new roman, helvetica font, etc.

test2.doc, written in myriad pro font, would try to open up, but would
then crash and shut down, saying that word had unexpectedly shut down
or what not.

myriad pro is the same font i was using that caused word to crash
before and what prompted me to figure out a solution.

i don't know why this is.

if anyone can help me out, please let me know.

thanks.

Neither do I, but you might be able to help me with a similar problem I
have.
Did you add any more open type fonts to your Mac about the time it
started crashing that doc?
(I'm looking for evidence that Word and other carbon applications can't
handle too many otfs.) It would be interesting to learn the names of
the new fonts if you did add some.

It is a puzzle to me too. Our symptoms are quite different.
Did you go through the clean up font corruption steps that John McGhie
suggested. Yours does sound like a broken font cache.

What did John McGhie suggest?

I'd like to know so I can try it myself.

Thanks.

I think that was in a different thread....I'm not sure what he said, but
look up "Safe Boot" and "Safe Mode" in Mac Help or Apple's KB. One of
the things it does is redo the font caches.
