Word Crashes When Opened

I am using Office 2003 Pro and have installed and re-installed to try and
combat this problem i am having.
On opening a blank or existing Word document it will remain open and active
for about 5 seconds and then freezes for a few more seconds until a dialog
box appears.
This occurs without fail.
'Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience.'
The other programs in the suite, such as excel work fine.
The same problem occurs when office 1997 pro and office XP pro.
