Word Crashes When Opening a Document

When trying to open a document on a file share word warns that the file is in
use (but it is not), when I try to open as "Read Only" word crashes. This
occurs in Word 2000 and Word 2007 on the same file. I have copied the file to
another location and get the same results. Is there a way to salvage the file?

Am I correct in guessing that if you install it locally to the C drive, it
still crashes Word? If so...

In Word 2007, trying opening it using the Open and Repair option (it is
under the little arrow attached to the OPEN button in the File Open dialog).

If that fails, you are down to using either the Recover text from any File
option or opening it in WordPad. You will lose formatting and any fancy
stuff but your text will be OK.
