Word crashes when searching beyond certain page

CJSnet

Hi there, hope you are able to help.

I have a large document some 65,000 words in length, and suddenly when I
search for a word or phrase that I know to be about halfway through, the
find dialog window crashes Word. The program becomes unresponsive and my
only option is to restart. Normally searching is instantaneous

Searching for a word that is before this point works fine.
Also, searching for this word from a few pages before it works fine. Go too
many pages back however, and I get the crash.

It seems Word is being 'tripped up' by passing a certain point in the doc
during search, yet it is all just text and a few bookmarks.

I have tried saving as a .doc, a .docx, and also using 'Open and repair' but
no good.

Any ideas?

Try SaveAs and choose RTF. Close the document and Word, then reopen Word and
the RTF and use SaveAs and choose dotx format again. Does the document
navigate correctly now?

Hi, thanks for the reply. Sadly it still hangs.

One thing I notice is it isn't really crashing, as I just see the spinning
cursor indefinately, but I can simply press Esc twice to cancel the Find
dialog and return to the document.

Any other ideas?

I wonder if (with infinite patience) it may actually complete the task
eventually? Alternatively, restrict the search to a section at a time.

Sadly it doesn't ever get there, it just gets stuck truly indefinitely.

I really want to find where the bug is. I believe i have narrowed it down
to a certain few pages of text. Yet there are no obvious corruptions.

A-ha! (Great band.) I found it!

I narrowed it down by searching repeatedly for 'y' which it found on almost
every line, until it got stuck. I then cut and pasted that paragraph back
as plain text.

When I did so it was prefixed with ¬¬¬

All searches fine now. How bizarre.
