Word crashes when using thesaurus

L

Laura

I'm running Office X in OS 10.2.8. I've downloaded the most recent
Office updaters. I'm writing mostly in Italian and French and using the
proofing tools from the Value Pack.

Just about every third time I use the thesaurus, Word crashes on me.
Sometimes the spellchecker causes a crash, too.

Any troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I'm
writing my thesis and having to relaunch Word every 20 minutes or so
is a major time drain.

Thanks!

Did you re-run all the updates after installing stuff from the Value Pack?
That's necessary. I assume that you've made sure the text, the thesaurus,
and the spellchecker are all consistent with each other and set to the same
language. I don't use multiple languages myself so am not very familiar
with the difficulties that can arise, but others checking this group are and
may have more to add.

Sounds like the problem is with the proofing tools for Italian or French.
Update 10.1.3 did address problems with those, but it has now been rolled
into 10.1.4, so make sure you have 10.1.4 installed (and 10.1.5), and that
the updates were run after installing the proofing tools.

Standard Troubleshooting Procedures for Word X:

See here to make sure you are fully updated:
http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/office/vxversions.html

Then check for general troubleshooting tips:
http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/word/troubleshooting.html
In addition to the tips listed there, check your Word Startup Folder (Apps:
Office: Office: Startup) and see whether you have any add-ins that may be
conflicting with Word (Endnote is a common culprit).

Please post back and let the newsgroup know what worked, or if you are
posting back because nothing worked, be sure to explain what you already
tried.

This link has a bit more information if you get desperate and aren't getting
newsgroup responses, but is presented in a less straightforward manner.

Make sure you have put in the special updater for Word that was released
specifically for customers who have French as one of their installed
languages. I believe this fixes that issue.

Thanks for the suggestion, John

If I'm already running 10.1.5, do I need to uninstall and then re-run the updaters, or can I just run 10.3

Hi Laura,

If you installed the proofing tools from the Value Pack *after* you'd
already updated to 10.1.5, then you should re-run all of the updaters to be
safe: 10.1.2, 10.1.4 (which includes 10.1.3) and 10.1.5.

If I'm not understanding your question, please post back. And to make it
easier for all of us, please keep the thread going by including previous
posts when you reply (unless they're no longer necessary). Otherwise we
have to search back for your previous posts to remind ourselves what it's
all about. Thanks!

Hi Beth

I think I installed the proofing tools first, then ran the updaters. But I'm not completely sure, so i guess I should start from scratch, no

Also, If I've already run 10.1.4 — which, as you mentioned includes the updates specific to the French and Italian proofing tools — and if I installed the VP before running the updaters, what might be the source of my problem?

Thanks for your help (and sorry about not including the original message in my previous post)

Haven't a clue what could make Word crash if all that is true. See here for
the standard things to check, once you've done the updates.

And did you already check for add-in conflicts? You aren't writing a thesis
and using Endnote, are you?

Note that to start from scratch, you need to run the uninstaller from the
value pack. Also repair permissions before and after installing. More info

That was 10.1.3, But 10.1.4 includes that update. The original poster.
Laura, said she already had 10.1.4 installed, and had applied it after
installing French and Italian form the Value Pack. So she's done all the
right things. Maybe the language tools did not get properly installed from
the Value pack first time.

At this point, I'd suggest using Office Remover (install for Vale Pack) to
remove Office, reinstall Office from CD, install language tools form Value
Pack, apply Office 10.1.2 (if version is not already 10.1.1 or later),
10.1.4 and 10.1.5 updaters.
