Word crashes whenever I try to save

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

For the past six or nine months it has been fine. Well, it'd crash once in awhile (especially in toggling between body and footnotes), but NOW it crashes ALL THE TIME. It seems to crash when I try to save, but also sometimes when I try to open another document -- or it threatens to crash (you know... the pinwheel rears its ugly head). Yesterday it crashed at least 10 times, and today already at least 5. I tried moving the Autorecovery and Normal template onto the desktop (the MS help man suggested this) -- it didn't help.

I'm finishing my dissertation and problems saving is about THE LAST thing I need (especially when I lose a bunch of unsaved writing/thought).

help? please...

Assuming Office & OS X are fully updated - nobody can be sure what to
suggest without your exact version info - the most common cause is
permissions errors. When's the last time you ran Disk Utility - Repair Disk
Permissions? Try that, then restart your Mac & see if the problem continues.

Thanks for your response. I don't know what permissions are, but I figured out how to run the Repair Permissions in Disk Utility. I also updated my firmware. I had high hopes that this would resolve my problems, but, alas, it just crashed again. This time it happened when I tried to open a new document (I already had one open).

I am using version 12.0.0 (071130) for Word (2008). And I have version 10.5.7 Mac OSX. I don't know if this helps you help me any more, but if you have any other suggestions please let me know.

OK, then I think I see where your problem is now that you've disclosed full
version info. Office 2008 12.0.0 is the original base installation. Since
2008 was released there have been numerous interim updates as well as
several major updates, of which you have apparently applied none -- I'm
surprised that any of the Office apps even launch :). The current update
level should be 12.1.7, so that needs to be addressed immediately.

In Word go to Help> Check for Updates. You'll need to start with 12.1.0
(SP1) followed by 12.1.7, but I believe you'll also need the latest version
of AutoUpdate itself. Everything should be handled automatically once you
begin. [I'd also suggest that you set the AutoUpdate app to run
automatically every 30 days in order to avoid repitition of this situation.]

Once all updates have been applied, repair permissions again & restart your
Mac. Reply in detail if you have any problems.

Hi again,

Thanks so much for your response. I tried to run the update (twice) and it just freezes -- it downloads the newer version (12.1.0) but it won't actually install it. Once it gets to the point where it prepares to install it, it just freezes up. There's about an eighth of an inch of "progress" made on the status bar. Any way around this?

Thanks again-- much appreciated.

Paige
