Word crashing after font install. Please help!

I installed the same group of fonts that work fine on both my macs onto
someone else's computer, and now they can't run Word. It crashes
during the optimizing font menu performance phase. It can't be a
single corrupt font, because I broke up the fonts into small groups and
removed them from Library/Fonts. Putting multiple groups back into the
fonts folder caused Word to crash again

Is there a physical limit to how many fonts Word can have? I know some
people have reported issues with Adobe Photoshop not "seeing" all the
fonts on a mac if there are too many, but at least it doesn't crash.
Word seemed to work again when I got the number of fonts down to 1410.

This version of Word is v.x, but it hasn't gotten the update to 10.1.6.
Would that make a differrence? Would upgrading to 2004 help?

In this case, it's probably a conflict between duplicate fonts. Use Font
Book to check.

I'm not sure if there's a limit to the number of fonts you can install, but
the more you install, the greater the chances of running into duplicates
and/or corruption. If the problems are due to such issues, then upgrading
to 2004 probably wouldn't make much difference. In fact, 2004 may even be a
little more sensitive to font issues than X.

On the other hand, your friend should update to 10.1.6 regardless. It won't
help with this problem (I don't think), but it's an important update.

I don't follow the logic. You have solved the problem: it's a font.
Things work fine when you remove them all, right? So add them back one
at a time, starting up Word each time, until you find the problem font.
(There is a faster way, using binary search techniques, but this is
simpler.) m.

Just some additional thoughts-

Putting multiple groups back into the
fonts folder caused Word to crash again

Could it not be that the bad font is in one of those 'groups'? Perhaps the
last group added before the last crash?
I got the number of fonts down to 1410.

Am I the only one who sees this as a red flag?
I thought I was excessive with a mere 325 active fonts! In addition to the
potential conflicts, duplication and corruption, could there not also be
some concern for available RAM?

Didn't even notice that. - Yes, that's insane. You're never ever going
to use 1000 fonts at once (i.e. in a single document) so there is never
any reason to have that many loaded at once. This is why there is Font
Book; use it to disable unneeded fonts. m.
