Word Crashing At End Of Spelling & Grammar Check

Hi ,

In general I am having a problem with word crashing, but the last couple
of days it is crashing in the same right at the end of a spelling and
grammar check.
When the spelling and grammar check is complete, a message appears:

"The spelling and grammar check is complete./ Text set to (no proofing) was
skipped. To find (no proofing) text, click Edit/Replace, click More, click
Format, click Language and choose (no proofing)."

When I click OK on that message, Word crashes and a "Microsoft Error
Reporting" window appears which says "Microsoft word has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." then
there's a check box that offers "Recover my work and restart MS Word." Below
that is "Please tell Microsoft about this problem." and "Don't Send is the
highlighted button which I press, and immediately Word starts back up, but
my Spelling Grammar corrections have disappeared from the document I was
working on.

OK. That's how it crashes.

Now. What I've done to find out to "no proofing" is opened a blank document
and gone to the "Language". Here's what I get:
In "Find Language" window there is no "(no proofing)" offered. "Find
Language" offers "Mark selected text as:" then there is a list of languages
and a scroll bar. At the top of the list of languages there is the choice
"(no language)".
Below the list of languages it says "The speller and other proofing
tools automatically use dictionaries of the selected language if available."
Below that is a check box offering "Do not check spelling or grammar."
In the check box are three icons. A check mark, a horizontal line and blank.
Below that from the left is default (grayed out) Cancel and OK.

There are other all too frequent crashes of word, but I don't remember
exactly what I was doing at the time. There is definitely something off,
and I'd like some advice on how to fix it.

Hi Rafael,

I came across a similar problem two days ago; I'd just read about the
Flesch-Kincaid Readability Test and I wanted to test it, and Word crashed
after the spelling and grammar check (but only for some documents). I'm
still trying to find out what exactly causes the crash, but I'm not putting
too much effort into it, as I almost never need the readability rating.

Long story short: see if unchecking "Show readability statistics" in Word's
Spelling & Grammar preferences prevents the crashes.

That's a corrupt dictionary, a corrupt document, or a corrupt Normal
template.

Begin by looking up "Custom Dictionary" in the help. Find yours and move it
to the desktop. If the crashes stop, that was it. If they don't put it
back.

Copy all of the text into a fresh, clean document. Try again. If the
crashes stop, that was it. If not, throw away the new document.

Re-name your Normal template. If the crashes stop... If not, come back to
us and we'll start in on the desperate measures

removal of custom dictionary, and pasting to a fresh document, with no
improvement. I located a template named 'normal' in the microsoft user data
folder, but don't know what it should be renamed to. I'd be grateful for any
further help please?

Word bases every new document (unless specified otherwise through custom
templates) on the Normal template; it absolutely requires a Normal template,
and if it can't find one, it will generate one from scratch, and that's
precisely what you are trying to get it to do by renaming your template. You
can rename it into anything you want, as long as it's not "Normal". If you
rename your template, say, "Norm", Word will not be able to find a Normal
template and generate a new one.

Letting Word create a new Normal template is a standard troubleshooting
technique, as the Normal template, since it is used so frequently, can be
quite prone to corruptions. If your problems disappear with the creation of
a new Normal template, then you can delete your old, renamed Normal file,
or, if you have any customisations which you'd like to keep, import those
first. If the new Normal template does not do anything to prevent the
crashing, you can quit Word, delete the new Normal template and rename your
old file back to "Normal" again; in that case, the crashes are caused by
something different.

Michel is right: you can call it anything you like. But I usually call it
"Normal 20060627.dot" or whatever today's date is, so if I later want some
stuff back from it *I* can find it again.

Thanks for that advice Michel, which enabled me to convince Word to generate
a new 'normal' template, but the problem occured exactly as before. I then
re-read the earlier replies to Rafeal about this problem, which made me turn
off the Flesch Kincaid readability, after which I still got the error
message, but without the crash this time.
So, now my problem is that i'm still getting error messages, but i did quite
like using the F-Kincaid, as i am a writer and use it as a flag for when i'm
getting a bit 'wordy'.
Very frustrating, as i know i've had this problem at least twice before,
never been able to solve it, and it mysteriously disappears and reappears.
Would reinstalling Word from CD solve the problem?
Is the fact that my copy is the student and teacher edition of Word 2004
relevant?

Did you remember to paste to a new document after you replaced the Normal
template? Replacing the Normal template affects only documents created
after you replace it.

When you pasted, did you take care to select all EXCEPT the last paragraph
mark in the document? If you paste that last paragraph mark, you will paste
the problem.

If you did those two, your problem should now be gone.

Re-installing only affects file that do not already exist. So unless you
run the Office Remover tool first, reinstalling has precisely zero effect,
because everything already exists so no change gets made at all.

The only difference between the Academic edition and the full version is the
price (same software, different licence restrictions).

Nope: You have a bad document or a bad dictionary: the only way to find out
which is to go through the current process, slowly and painstakingly.

If this doesn't work, we'll need to paste into a new document all over
again, this time, pasting as "Unformatted Text." If that fixes it, we know
it was the document. If it doesn't, we know it was the dictionary.

Hope we don't have to do that: you would need to completely reformat.
Because you're a writer, and I am a writer, amongst ourselves we can admit
that we know damn well when we're suffering from typographical diarrhoea, we
don't need abuse from F-Kincaid

Thank you! Using the unformatted text paste seems to have done the trick, so
i assume it was the document corrupted. I've learned a lot in the process,
always good, and am gratelful for your generous help. (and yes, I hear you
John,- Flesch-Kincaid is an unnecessary prop that even an
insecure-beginner-writer like me can live without ☺)

Did you remember to paste to a new document after you replaced the Normal
template? Replacing the Normal template affects only documents created
after you replace it.

When you pasted, did you take care to select all EXCEPT the last paragraph
mark in the document? If you paste that last paragraph mark, you will paste
the problem.

If you did those two, your problem should now be gone.

Re-installing only affects file that do not already exist. So unless you
run the Office Remover tool first, reinstalling has precisely zero effect,
because everything already exists so no change gets made at all.

The only difference between the Academic edition and the full version is the
price (same software, different licence restrictions).

Nope: You have a bad document or a bad dictionary: the only way to find out
which is to go through the current process, slowly and painstakingly.

If this doesn't work, we'll need to paste into a new document all over
again, this time, pasting as "Unformatted Text." If that fixes it, we know
it was the document. If it doesn't, we know it was the dictionary.

Hope we don't have to do that: you would need to completely reformat.
Because you're a writer, and I am a writer, amongst ourselves we can admit
that we know damn well when we're suffering from typographical diarrhoea, we
don't need abuse from F-Kincaid

Thanks for that advice Michel, which enabled me to convince Word to generate
a new 'normal' template, but the problem occured exactly as before. I then
re-read the earlier replies to Rafeal about this problem, which made me turn
off the Flesch Kincaid readability, after which I still got the error
message, but without the crash this time.
So, now my problem is that i'm still getting error messages, but i did quite
like using the F-Kincaid, as i am a writer and use it as a flag for when i'm
getting a bit 'wordy'.
Very frustrating, as i know i've had this problem at least twice before,
never been able to solve it, and it mysteriously disappears and reappears.
Would reinstalling Word from CD solve the problem?
Is the fact that my copy is the student and teacher edition of Word 2004
relevant?
