Word Crashing before it even starts

A few days ago windows crashed while I was working on a document. Now it
won't even start up again. I've tried updating, uninstalling, reinstalling,
and returning to a system restore point and no luck so far.

The error message is the classic: "Microsoft word for windows has
encountered a problem and needs to close, we are sorry for the inconvenience.
" Usually I don't mind, but I can't even get windows started.

any help woudl be much appreciated.

I hope you meant that you can't even get WORD started (not Windows).
Likely, you need only rename your normal.dot file, but you should be
informed about it so you understand the ramifications. Please see:
