Our OS X 10.4.6 Macintoshes crash sporadically (every 5 to 15 prints)
when printing from Word. We believe that the problem is exacerbated
when we change to a new printer before printing the job. All printers
crash, so it isn't one particular printer that's causing trouble. The
crash occurs at the moment that Word should be queuing the job (you
never see the progress bar indicating queuing; instead, you see the
Microsoft Error Reporter). We did NOT see these problems on our network
using previous configurations (Word 2004 11.2.1, OS X 10.4.1/10.3.8).
All printers are Hewlett-Packard laserjets or deskjets, various models
(we are a school with many printers). Here are the strategies we have
tried so far UNSUCCESSFULLY. If you have any other ideas, we'd
appreciate hearing about them.
UNSUCCESSFUL strategies:
* use up-to-date drivers from HP & IP printing
* use drivers that ship in 10.4.6 OS & IP printing
* repair permissions / fsck disk
* reinstall Office from disc and patch to current version
* reinstall Office from disc and patch to March 2006 version
* create brand new user account (new preferences)
* repair fonts
* reset printing system
* turn on debug mode for cups (the crash occurs before anything is
written to the cups log, so the log doesn't show any information even
in debug mode)
Help! Thanks in advance.
