Hi Ethan:
If you do a Remove Office and then re-install immediately, you will not need
your CD key, since that is the one thing that gets left intact.
However, if you do not have the CD key, you can get a replacement by ringing
Microsoft: they make a charge for that service. You should get a CCD key,
because when your hard disk fails and you have to replace it, you will need
it.
I agree that your problem probably is NOT fonts. But it's not going to be
fixed without running the Office Remover program. The fault is not in any
of the files that get "installed", it's in the files that get "generated"
when the application first runs after being installed. So the bad files in
question are not actually on the CD, they are generated locally on the
machine to which you are installing. But they will not be RE-generated
unless they are first removed.
Cheers

DM,
Thanks so much for your help and advice. All the webistes were really
clear. However, none seemed to solve my problem. I did everything
suggested except the font issue because the MS webiste said that if
fonts are corrupted, the splash screen comes up and then it crashes. In
my case, the splash screen does not even come up.
And of course, when I went to re-install, I realized I thought I had my
CD # but I had my registration #. So, unless there is a way to track
down the CD # from the registration # then I don't think I can re-install.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
ethan
