Word Crisis: Help, anyone!

David Edwards

I'm in the US at the moment and my wife, in the UK, has
managed to erase almost all her university thesis from a
Word document which she then resaved before calling me.
She also closed Word down before calling me.

Is there any way that the earlier file version could be
restored?

She is absolutely distraught at the moment.

Did she have auto-save every xx minutes turned on? (It is by default). If
yes, go to Word, Open Tools->Options->File Locations and check for where the
auto-saves are kept. If she goes there, she may find a pretty recent copy
of her files.

Thanks for the suggestion, but when she checked the folder
there were no files in it: I know that autosave was on,
but maybe shutting down Word would have deleted those
temporary files: is there any way that those files could
be restored?

I believe autosave files are deleted when Word / Win is shut down.
If this doc is vital, and you dont know *exactly what yr doing!!!* you might
be advised to contact a specialist recovery firm, eg http://www.ontrack.com/
They usually operate on a no recovery no fee.
It is important if going with this to leave pc alone, ie do not switch on or
use.
I have to say that there are numerous posts in ng's regarding people who
have lost vital data, and apparently have no backup regime in place.
Remember a sys can go wrong, be stolen.

Do you have an unease utility such as Norton? If so use it to find and then
unease the temp file. Also check the recycle bin.
