Word cursor appearance

In Office Word 2003 (11.5604.5606), why has the appearance of the
cursor/insertion point changed? It used to be a full-height vertical line,
ie, '|'.
Now it's a half-height (or less) vertical line.

Brilliant. That seems to do the trick.
But why, I ask myself? Never mind, it works...

We don't know what causes the problem in the first place or why that
solution works. Just one of those Word mysteries.
