Word cursor error

Cursor is described as 1/1 but it is actually at the top of the page.
Template with graphic in header and info in footer will not display if opened
as a new document. Both problems disappear if an older document is opened
that includes the template or has appropriate cursor location. This must
have happened inadvertently ... I've only been using Word for 10 years and
have never seen it before. All of my documents are saved as rtf.
