word data won't sort numbers

I have entered numbers into a data file I created and when I try to get them
to sort
they are gruped by the first number I.E. all ones are together but not in
larged to small ammount.

What is the data source?

I assume that by the ones being together you mean somthing like

1
11
13
2
21

etc. which indicates that they are being treated as text.
