Word default page

Is it possible to open Word without a blank page appearing? In Word 2004 the blank page disappeared automatically when a previously created page was opened but that doesn't appear to be happening in 2008. This means that any previously existing document being worked on must be closed when finished and also the blank default page. It's just an extra action that wasn't necessary before.

It's a bug. It is supposed to work the way it always did, and usually, it
does :) Hopefully they will fix it.

But "no" it is not possible to suppress the blank document in Word:Mac.

Cheers

Hello blyth -

You're getting the blank doc that hangs around because you're switching back
to Word - while no files are open - by clicking the Dock icon. This is a
design feature that could possibly be changed if enough folks complain about
it & offer valid justification through Help> Send Feedback. Keep in mind
that it is per Apple guidelines, so if your complaint is simply the
equivalent of "I don't like it!" your vote may not carry much weight:)

If you use Command+Tab to switch back or dbl-click a file icon in a Finder
window the new blank doc won't be generated.

If Word isn't already running, the new doc generated on launch *does*
evaporate when you open another file.

Tip: If you do have multiple docs open & want to close them all but leave
Word running, hold Shift while accessing the File menu - the Close command
will appear as Close All. Alternatively, hold Option while you click the
Close button of a foreground doc to close all open doc windows or assign a
keystroke to the FileCloseAll command: I use Option+Command+W.

So Command-w looks good as a "keyboard shortcut applied without thinking" to
get rid of an unwanted blank document in these circumstances, I suppose...
