word delete's its own exe file

I'm running windows xp and office 97. For the last 3 years, they have worked
fine together. I just did a reinstall on my system and for some reason,
every time I try to do anything in Word, it shuts down and deletes the
executable file. Help!

Possibly a macro virus infecting the normal.dot template?

Try renaming normal.dot and creating a new one.
