Word deletes my saved document

If I'm working on a document and I haven't saved it yet, Word gives it a TMP
file name that begins with a tilde and is hidden. I then have to "Save As"
to change the name.

If I have saved the document under a particular name, Word deletes the saved
document from my hard drive and renames the current document to the TMP file
mentioned above and I have to re-"save as" the file.

I've changed autorecovery and backup settings around and nothing changes
this behavior. I keep losing my work and it's frustrating. Even if I save
it, it disappears. My file directory will show multiple TMP files that are
the right size and other "recovered file" files that are only 1k in size.
The recovered files are TXT files, but contain some text and some jibberish.
The TMP files are unopenable to recover lost work.

What is causing this behavior and how can I stop it?

It may be helpful if you can tell us what version of Word you are using
as well as what version of Windows.

The computer is an XP SP2 machine running Microsoft Word 2000 OEM.

A complete virus scan with an up to date Kaspersky Internet Security found
no virii.

Is there anyone that can answer this question?

Normally the Document is called "Document 1" or "Document 2" etc until
you save it and give it a name. Where are you seeing this ".tmp" file?

The title of the document is displayed in the title bar for the document.
Even if I "save as", it will be okay until some point when it gets changed
to the tmp file. The temp file is also at the "save as" location. I've
taken to NOT saving the document if I'm still going to be working on it so
that I won't lose it.

So when you open a New Word Document, what does it say on the title bar?

A

Andy

It will say Document 1 when a new doc is opened. But it changes on it's
own. I've turned off automatic saving, but the behavior persists.

Well I have NEVER, in over twenty years of using Office, seen a document
change its name on its own.
Are you sure you have no malware or viruses on your machine? No Macros set
up that are accidentally enabled?
