Word detected a problem with the existing Normal.dot

I have checked the registry entries for a Terminal Server Windows 2003 and
the message comes up every other time you open Word 2003. I have renamed the
Normal.dot and forced a creation of a new Normal.dot file. What other options
are there to fix this Normal.dot message?

I searched TechNet and other sources for that error message, and did not
find it. Are you positive that's the exact wording of the error message?

Hi FSN Tech,

You may want to try the steps in this article to check for disabled items.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827706

Also, one of the causes of this is Word finding a document file rather than a template where the file has been named as Normal.dot.
It can also happen if there are left over temp files being found by Word.

If you use Start=>Search for files named
*Normal*
do you get more than one found?

Also recycle files found with a search of
~$*.*;*.tmp

This is the exact wording "Word has detected a problem with the existing
Normal.dot. Would you like to create a new Normal.dot? Yes or No. I forgot
to say this is happening on a Terminal Server Windows 2003 SP2 and the
message comes up every other time.

Yes there were more than 1 Normal.dot in the Templates directory because I
had renamed some old Normal.dot files and I renamed a Normal.doc file that I
found earlier. There is a normal.fmt file in c:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office11\1033 directory. I did see some Normal.dot files in the
Recent folder as well. I need to add this scenerio is on a Windows 2003
Terminal Server SP2. Any other ideas?

I'd like to add to this problem, but have a few more details if anyone can
help.
I am also running Word on SBS2003 TS and am now receiving this error after
having installed the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack.
The error (as quoted above) is displayed every other time you start Word; on
starting word after creating a new Normal.dot file, Word starts in recovery
mode.
I then looked into the registry to action the suggested solution KB885380 -
remove the subkeys DisabledItems and StartUp from the Resiliency key; as it
turns out, those subkeys were not there and couldn't therefore, be deleted.
I noticed there were two recovery items in the key
Resiliency\DocumentRecoveryInfo that didn't need recovering - so I removed
them. Word started without a problem. On closing however, the two
DocumentRecoveryInfo subkeys returned - upon restarting Word, I received the
'detected a problem with Normal.dot' error and Word started in Doc Recovery
Mode.
I removed the entire Resiliency key (after exporting it) and started Word -
no problems until I then restarted Word. All the resiliency keys had
returned, as well as the two DocumentRecoveryInfo subkeys.

Removing and renaming Normal.dot does nothing to solve the problem.
Stumped.
