word dies when not connected to internet.

Running win2k, office 2000.

Problem: word seems to run correctly when connected to the internet,
however, when not connected (this is a laptop - no wireless card - so
it happends quite often) - word will die after a few seconds with
"Winword.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You
will need to restart the program."

I have gone so far as to uninstall word completely and reinstall. No
help.

Any ideas?

Do you have a locally installed printer set as the Windows Default?

No, I don't.
Is that good or bad?

There will probably NEVER be a local printer connected to this laptop.
If having a local printer as default would make this go away, would it
work even if the printer was not connected? (We could connect one
just long enough to set it as a local default...) Or is there some
sort of "dummy" printer setup that might work better?

Bad. Install a local printer driver and set it as the default printer (even
if you don't have one).

To clarify what Terry is saying, Word will work a lot better if it has a
printer driver to refer to because it depends on the printer driver for
information on nonprintable area and other layout issues. If you don't
intend ever to print any of your Word documents, it doesn't matter what
printer you select; just go to Control Panel | Printers (or Start | Settings
| Printers), double-click on Add Printer, and use to wizard to install any
printer that strikes your fancy. If you will ever be printing the documents,
however, install the driver for the printer you will ultimately be using
(one that is connected to another system you intend to print from, that is).
You need not have a printer connected to the computer, but you do need to
have a printer driver installed.
