Word Doc acquires Gastro bug.

?

??

Why does my document, somtimes during editing, decide to bloat in file size?
Eg. file size currently = 1,956Kbytes.
After some hours of editing the size grows to anywhere up to 50+Mbytes (no
BS) and edit response is very slow.
I did find that the tip I got earlier about "Open"+little black down arrow
and selecting "Repair and open" reduced the file to a respectable size after
killing of the huge list of errors and saving. (Ta Garfield)
This is something I've never experienced in all prior versions of Word and
believe it to be a bug in Word03 as I still use Word in the same limited way
as I've always done.
Please check it and patch it Bill.

Bill nor any MS staff monitor this Newsgroup. It is all peer-to-peer
support.

There is not a bug in Word 03 that causes file bloat. This is caused by
several possibilities:

FastSaves is enabled
Versions is enabled
Track Changes is enabled
Inserting BMP or other large format graphics
Document corruption

And probably a host other formatting faux pas.

There are a number of reasons for excessive file size, including:

1. Fast Saves: Disable this at on the Save tab of Tools | Options.

2. Preview Picture: Clear the check box on the Summary tab of File |
Properties.

3. Versions (File | Versions): Make sure "Automatically save version on
close" is not turned on.

4. Revisions (Tools | Track Changes):
Highlight Changes: Make sure "Highlight changes on screen" is turned on
(or that "Final Showing Markup" is displayed).
Accept/Reject Changes: If "Accept All" or "Reject All" is available then
revisions are present; accept or reject all changes, then turn Track Changes
off.

5. Embedded True Type fonts (Tools | Options | Save); embedding fonts should
be avoided wherever possible.

6. Embedded graphics: When feasible, it is preferable to link the graphics.
That is, when you insert the graphic, click the arrow beside Insert in the
Picture dialog and choose Link to File rather than Insert or Insert and
Link.

7. Embedded objects: These are even worse than ordinary graphics saved with
the document. If you see an { EMBED } code, the graphic is an OLE object.
Unless you need to be able to edit the object in place, unlink it using
Ctrl+Shift+F9.

8. File format: Make sure you are saving as a Word document; in some cases
..rtf (Rich Text Format) files are significantly larger than .doc files.

9. Document corruption: See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm.

Thanks but as I said B4, I never had this problem ever in versions of Word
prior to V2003.
I am convinced that W2003 has bugs in it.
I still do the exact same formatting and editing that I've always done.
I'll try and capture a list of errors next time and post it in this thread.
Interesting that there is another post by Chris Dehmel further down the list
headed "Subject: Word 2003/2000 compatibility issue" (2/28/2005 6:51AM.) and
he also claims of file size bloats using 2003. Strike 2!
I think the errors creep in while changing the format of a line of text etc.

Yeahhh, I agree with you. I encountered same bloating problem. At one time
my doc bloated to over 300 MB! ... It is MB, not KB! Fortunately for that one
time Word crashed while trying to close that file, and it was smart enough to
response with auto-repair. After being repaired, the doc file shrinked to
slightly over 10 MB.

After facing this bloating problem for several days (actually, weeks) I
noticed in my observation that the file size bloated after some formatting
activities. Just as you said, "I think the errors creep in while changing the
format of a line of text etc."

Likewise, I agree with you. There's bugs somewhere in Word 2003 that causing
this bloating problem.
