Word doc attachments are received as Note Pad docs.

Word doc attachments are received as Note Pad and therefore open on note pad
from the email. I can themn sve and reopen with Word but this is a hassel.

In that case they are still received as Word documents but you have your
default in Windows set to open *.doc files with Notepad. Change this default
back to Word. If you don't know how to do this, ask in a newsgroup of your
version of Windows.
