Word doc "balloons" when inserting photo

I have a need to distribute my bio to a diverse group - some on dialup.

It's a one page document - 12k in size. When I insert my photo (145k), the
resulting document "balloons" to over 3 meg!

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better way?

Thanks for your help.

What format is your photo? Word works best with JPEG, GIF, PNG and other
compressed formats. Also always using Insert, Picture: avoid copying and
pasting a picture into Word.

Finally, Make sure that Under Tools, Options, Save tab that FastSaves is
unchecked (CLEAR).

The photo was a jpg - and I believe I did a cut & paste.... Perhaps cut &
paste uncompressed the jpg?

Anyway, thanks for the reply - I'll try the insert technique and let you
know......
