Word Doc body --> Email body

Can't find any answer to this (basic, I hope) question...

Given an open Word doc and an open Outlook
mail item (using Word as the text editor, HTML formatted), how do I
copy/insert the content of the Word doc into the email body?
I seem to get text only and no formatting with everything I've tried.

I think this falls into that catagory of "you would think this was easy,
but..."

I am trying to do the following:
with automation (from a VB6 app)
using Office XP or 2003
create a new HTML email programmatically into which I
place the contents of multiple small existing Word docs

So I have been trying various approaches to no avail - including
range.formattedtext = .range2
so no, I haven't actually been holding the contents of the source doc in a
string variable.
