Word doc changes not saved when opened as attachment

When I open a word doc from an email attachement and edit
it and save changes these changes are lost when I re-open
the documnet. Where do these changes get saved to?? is it
possiable to get them back?

ps I know I can open the doc attachment and then save as
and work on this doc but my question is if you do not do
this can you recover changes made if you just hit "save".
