Word doc corrupt after uploading/emailing

I'm having trouble with Word docs corrupting after I email them or upload them to one of my Google sites. The docs don't show any signs of trouble while I'm working on them, but when I upload one of the docs to Google sites, the file appears as a .doc.html file, instead of a .doc file, and becomes almost illegible due to additional characters and symbols being scattered throughout. Manually changing the extension of the file from .doc.html to .doc doesn't correct the problem.
The problem also occurs when I email documents with Hostgator webmail. Co-workers who receive emailed files are either unable to open them, or are unable to do anything with them due to the files being corrupt and illegible.
My operating system is Mac 10.5.7, and my Word version is 11.5.3. Norton has found no viruses or malware after multiple scans, and repairing permissions hasn't solved the problem, either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You're right - there's nothing wrong on your system nor with Word nor with
your documents. The problem is caused by Google & Hostgator. They're making
changes that they shouldn't be making to the files you're transmitting.

As for Google, you don't say what purpose or method is involved so I'd
suggest you contact their user support & scream loudly enough to get some
attention at a higher level than tier 1 customer service. You might also
consider using PDFs rather than docs, although I'm not sure what you mean by
"upload... to Google sites".

As for the email issue, Zip your docs before attaching. There are other
considerations if these attachments are going to the Dark Side rather than
other Macs.

I also noticed that you're an update behind on your Office instalation -
11.5.4 is the most current release. It has no bearing on this matter but it
would be best to get it applied.
