Word doc file recovery

HELP - trying to access course work saved as MS Word doc. Running Word 2002
on Windows XP Home edition. Problem relates to a single file - Word opens
ok, other doc files open ok but the doc I am working on fails with error
message "The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions........

I have searched and confirmed existance and location of file - interestingly
I cannot open the file from my backup device (memory stick) but all other
word docs will open from here. Anyone got any ideas on recovering this file?
It represents some 6 months of work.

If you are using Norton AntiVirus (or a similar Symantec product), disable
the Office Plug-in.
