WORD DOC IS COMING UP IN GIBERISH

I had made a word doc back in February and now when I open it a File
Conversion dialog box opens up and the text is all gibberish. The dialog
ask's me to select a text encoding. It gives me 3 options, Windows
(Default), MS-DOS, or Other Encoding. The document doesn’t include any
imbedded objects. It’s just plain text. Below is a sample of what I see
when I open it up.

That looks like a zip file. What is the document's file extension - and have
you ever changed it?

It is, in fact, what a Word 2007 (*.docx) file looks like when viewed in a hex
editor. The .docx format is really a zip file containing XML files and other
things, including the [Content_Types].xml file at the top level.

If you have Word 2007, or an earlier version with the Compatibility Pack, try
renaming the file with the .docx extension.

Jay,

That was the problem. Some how it got renamed to a doc file. I'm using
office 2003, so why would it be saved as a docx file if I didn't convert it
to that format?

I can't say definitely what happened, but if you do have the Compat Pack,
it's possible to make it save in .docx format. Could there be a macro or
add-in somewhere in your computer that did it?
