I have a Word document link in my Outlook email. When I click it it opens in
Internet Explorer. The doc file is saved at Sharepoint Document library (the
file is
named http://xxx.filename.doc. How can make it open in MS Word and be able
to overwrite the file? Is this possible?

Thanks!

Hi, I would try this
1.Save the document and then
A) try either to evoke context menu and select the WORD or drag and drop it
on Word icon
B) rename the file http://xxx.filename.doc to filename.doc and then open it
in Word

thanks for your reply.

Is there a way so that when I click the path it will just open in word?
I want to be able to open the file directly from the path and edit it.
Thanks!

Already solved that one...I have another problem though, when I open the
document and tried to edit it, I can't save it.There was a read only error.I
already checked but it is not read only and there is enough space to save.
How do I do this?

I think that the problem is the name http://xxx.filename.doc. It's actually
doc document, however, you have the http:// atbeginning which indicates the
document to be save on some server.

I think If you do SAVE AS filename.doc (without the http://) instead of
SAVE that could solve the problem.

Thanks for your reply. But I don't think that's the problem.
I am actually sending the link(file path) of the word document to an email
as an email body.
When I open the mail and click the link, and do some edits, and save, it
shows a read only error. I can't seem to overwrite the server file, but I was
able to save it as another name..How do I do this?

Ok, not sure I fully understand, I will do my best yo explain it
When I open the mail and click the link, and do some edits, and save, it
shows a read only error. I can't seem to overwrite the server file, but I was
able to save it as another name
The problem is in the file name according to me.
If you will have file http://filename.doc and want to save it, the computer
thinks you want to save it on web with address http://filename.doc which
naturaly doesn't exist. So that's why the computers tells you read only.
So when you SAVE it AS anothername.doc without the http:/ everythings OK as
it's save as anothername.doc on your HDD.
Basically the trouble is in the name of the file. (The http:/ also indicates
computer to associate with web broser, that's why you ended up with opening
that file in IE instead of Word).
You need to save the document as anotherfilename.doc (without the http) on
your HDD and then attach this file to your email.
Hope that answered you Q, if not, could you kindly explain me the problem
once again.

Hello!
Thanks for your reply.

I get what you're saying. It's just that I am not actually including htt://
etc... in the file name. I just click the hyperlink in the email body then I
get to open my Word document. Then I do some edits and
when I click File menu -> Save, I get the default directory as the Saving
folder, when I change the Save folder to our Sharepoint server folder, then
it becomes read only error.
Hope you can help me with this. Thanks again

Hello,
I'm really sorry but seems I will not be to help you although I would like.
I have no idea at this time, if I got any I will post it.

It is possible, and in fact that's what is supposed to be happening.

But you need to talk to your Sharepoint Administrator to discover why it's
not happening for you: it's probably to do with the way the permissions have
been configured on your machine, or in the way IE has been configured.

Internet Explorer should recognise the incoming file type as ".doc" and hand
it off to Word to open in Word itself, not in the IE Window (which is what
it is doing).

The reason it's doing that would be:

* The file is not actually a .doc, it may be a .html or a .xml, regardless
of what the extension says. If it is, the browser will open it instead of
handing it off.

* The permissions are such that you only have read-only access to that
document.

* Sharepoint is not set up correctly.

* Your software is not installed correctly.

* There's a bad entry in your registry.

To solve any of these problems, you will need Administrator access, so go
ask someone who has :)

Cheers
