Word docs open in AbiWord

Lately, any Word documents that I download from my school or get sent
to me in emails open in AbiWord and have AbiWord icons. I only have
AbiWord on my machine because one particular person has Word Perfect
and I can't open those docs in Appleworks or Word. This is really
starting to bug me. Any suggestions other than get rid of AbiWord?
