word docs open in text edit

A

Alison

I've recently installed Office OSX on my g4 (OSX 10.2.8). Word docs always open in text edit unless I open through Word app or control/click file name --> select open with Other... --> select Word --> check "always open with". I've tried other combinations after control/click (selecting Word rather than Other, not checking "always open"). I've tried restarting after every combination. This happens with newly created Word docs as well as with docs created with previous Word versions. Office OSX Excel docs are opening just fine.

Hi Alison,

You need to repair disk permissions and update Office X if you haven't
already.

For OS 10.2.x or 10.3:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select
your hard disk, then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair
Disk Permissions".

To update, download (<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/#OfficeX>) and
install the 10.1.2, 10.1.4 (includes 10.1.3) and 10.1.5 updaters. Then
repair permissions again.

Hi Beth

I saw your recommendations to Ron S. and repaired permissions - to no avail. So about updating: I'm running Office 10.1.4 and I see on the Mactopia page that there's an Entourage Exchange 10.1.4 Update that - if I'm reading this correctly - I have to install before I install the 10.1.5 update. I also see that the download time on the Exchange update is 2.5 hours - and then another .5 for the 10.1.5 update. I use Entourage (10.1.4) but don't connect to an Exchange server - do I really need that update? (I hope this isn't a dumb question.

Thanks - really appreciate your help

Hi Alison,

In your original post, you said, "Word docs always open in text edit unless
I open through Word app or control/click file name --> select open with
Other... --> select Word --> check "always open with". I assumed that meant
you had also clicked "Change All." If you didn't, then that's your problem.

As for the Exchange/10.1.4 update, the reason you need it is noted in the
last sentence of the description: "This update also includes improvements to
Word X, Excel X, and PowerPoint X." And yes, you do need it before
installing 10.1.5.

Are you on a dial-up 56k modem? If so the download will indeed take that
long. If you're on DSL or cable modem, it will be much quicker.

By the way, there are no dumb questions around here, but occasionally a dumb
answer ... like the one I gave you when I failed to determine if you'd done
a "Change All." :)

Where's the "change all" option? My IT guy told me from his car phone on Friday that there's a change all option, but I just don't see it. I'm looking at the "Choose Application" window - I'm seeing Recommended Apps from MS Office X, selecting MS Word, and below that there's "Always Open With" to check, a Go To: text field, and Add to Favorites, Cancel, and Open

OK. Maybe that's what the update will fix? I will proceed with that and hope for the best. Thanks for interpreting the details (and yay! I have cable modem)

Hi Alison,

See, here's my problem: I'm in Office 2001 not X, so I can't check for you.
All I can do is repeat the basic instruction: Select one Word doc ending in
".doc", do a Get Info (cmd-I or control-click and choose Get Info), select
"Opens With", change to Word X, and then click "Change All". The update
won't make a difference to this procedure.

Hey Paul (or anyone else in Word X), are you listening? What are we missing
here?

In the contextual menu made by control-click there's an "Open With" menu
item. DON'T choose that. Dayo's 100% correct : choose "Get Info" instead.
(Or simply press select the file and cmd-I to Get Info pane, as I said
earlier, without control-clicking.)

In the Get Info pane, there's another "Opens With" popup button. If you make
your choice there, then a button immediately below - "Change All" - which
has been dimmed ,is not activated. Click it. Now you won't have to choose
"Opens With" again.

DM - you're right, Get Info was the key. Here's where I got off track: when you control/click on the file, the menu that drops down gives several choices - Open, Open With-->, Get Info, Trash, etc. I was selecting "Open With -->" instead of "Get Info", which then has the "Open with:" option in its menu window. A little confusing for the novice

I've already downloaded & updated & repaired everything - everything seems to be in good working order

Thank you both SO MUCH for taking the time to help me with this. I can stop gnashing my teeth now and go out

I think the step Alison was missing was the Get Info

But also Alison, if you are in Office 10.1.4, then the 10.1.4 update ha
already been run. There's only one

See here for directions on checking the update status
