Word docs unexpectedly close

R

RBR_07

Using Word 2000 SP3 build 6926, the latest build has been downloaded and is
now being tested (although according to MS, there is nothing in it that
addresses this problem specifically), and Windows 2000 SP4:

With multiple documents open - all using DocsOpen 3.9 DMS - if you close one
document, all of them unexpectedly close. All unsaved edits are lost.
Sometimes there is an application error at the crash and sometimes they just
close down.

One user has reported just watching the icons in the taskbar quickly close
one by one.

The problem cannot be reproduced, hence the difficulty in testing the latest
build. We do not have handwriting recognition installed, as has been
suggested to a post on 4/25/05.

There are several global add-ins, but I haven't made any changes to them in
months, and nothing major in two years. I'm fairly technical, but drawing a
complete blank on this problem! Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thank you.

RBR,

To properly trouble shoot the issue, you would need to implement a process
of elimination by removing all add-in's etc. and adding them back until the
issue no longer occurs. As the issue is not reproducible, this will most
likely be very time consuming.

It appears that Hummingbird has a new product to replace OPEN Docs. You may
want to contact them to see if this is a known issue and/or addressed with
the new product.

Please understand that with OPEN Docs being a 3rd party product, it is
difficult at best to properly assist you in troubleshooting.

Larry,

I would like to test that way, and it's worked for other problems, I've been
using that methodology since '91, but these particular users can't go without
the macros they need for numbering, bates, etc. They wouldn't be able to work
long enough to test the theory. I also don't think it's the add-ins as they
haven't changed in so long.

I was beginning to think it was something about the network printers,
however. Doesn't Word use the printer driver to correctly display the
document on the screen? So if something went wrong with the connection to the
network, is it conceivable that Word would just shut down or crash?

We have the latest build and patches from DocsOpen, and they have no
reported conflicts. But since this is exactly the problem that MS fixed with
SP3, I was also wondering if we can confirm that the service pack has been
properly applied. The build number reflects it, but is there another test
that you know of?

I appreciate your feedback.

Word definitely needs to see a printer driver: if there is a network
problem, Word may easily crash: it certainly won't open if it cannot see a
printer driver.

Thanks for your suggestions. We're installing some printers locally to see if
that helps (direct port over the network). Keeping my fingers crossed.
