word document changes to word pad documents automatically

Due to some security problem, all word documents saved (Microsoft Office 200
Professional) using microsoft word automatically changes to wordpad documents.
These documents cannot be opened with microsoft word, by double clicking the
document name. When I double click, it opens with word pad. And I hate it.

I scanned my computer with the latest Norton anti virus software, but it did
not discover any problem.

Is there a security update to fix it?

First, if it is not already turned off, disable the "Office Plug-In" in
Norton AV.

Then you need to reregister Word (and this doesn't mean calling Microsoft)
on your computer.
