word document corrupt when opening oulook

Here's a wierd one. If I have word open and then open
outlook, word closes immediately and the document is
placed on my desktop but is corrupt. If you try to open
it the code is screwed up and it thinks it's in Japanese.
You cannot covert the document to english.

Any ideas??
