Word document freezes whenever an image is displayed or formatted?

I am at my wits end.

My PC has begun freezing whenever it is in Word and I open a document that
includes an image/graphic (which is nearly all of them).

I have to wait a good ten seconds before the document will unfreeze so that
i can page down and begin typing. It also means that i can't edit any
pictures because i can't see them!

My picture placeholder option is not ticked. All of my documents are stored
on a server and when opening them on a colleagues PC I have no problems so I
can, therefore, only assume the problem is with my PC. Does anyone have any
clues? Thanks
