Word document from PC is blank

Peter Thorn

I have a problem with Word documents from a customer. It is blank when
opened in Office 2004 (both if I double-click on it and if I force it open i
Word, by dragging it).
It is a .doc document, I don't know what version of Word it is created in,
but if I open it in Word 2003 on windows, it shows everything, as it should.
Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks,
Peter

Hi Peter

If the document content is formatted as 'hidden' and your Mac is configured
to not display hidden text, that might explain it.

Cheers

I just ran into something similar recently. For some reason under
my view preferences, the Show Drawings box was unchecked. Some of
the Word docs that I was getting have all the text put into
figure type frames (not sure what you call them exactly) but
essentially, all the text was recorded in "drawings".

Anyway, checking the Show Drawings box in Word preferences fixed
my problem.

Not sure why it was turned off. I may have turned it off a ways
back to read some docs with a lot of pictures in them. In any
event, hope might give you some ideas.

Hi Peter -

The file format for Word on PC & Mac has been exactly the same for a number
of versions, and since you *can* open the file it suggests the problem may
be with the content. Some stuff that can be put into a Word doc on one
platform doesn't translate to the other, but what you don't specify is what
the "everything" is that "shows" on the PC.

Have you tried using the traditional File>Open command? I believe this
enables Word to employ certain translators that get bypassed with the other
two methods you mentioned.

Can you be more specific about the file content? What happens if you click
around in the doc on the Mac - does anything get selected such as an empty
box?

Also, how is the file being transferred from PC to Mac?

Hello Peter,

And if the excellent advice you've received doesn't fix the problem, try
this:

1. With the strange document open, click anywhere in it and key Command-a
to Select All.

2. Command-c to copy.

3. Command-n to open a new blank document.

4. Edit menu => Paste Special => Unformatted text.

If that results in visible text, post back so we can look into the
possibilities (although if it's just the one-off document giving you
trouble, that might be all you need to do).

Cheers,

* SUGGESTION -- KEEP REVISITING AFTER YOU POST: If you post a question, keep
re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best solution is provided;
sometimes you'll be asked for further information. Good tips about getting
the best out of posting are at
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/AccessNewsgroups.html and
http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari you may see a
blank page and have to hit the circular arrow icon -- "Reload the current
page" -- two or more times).

* AVOID BEING SPAMMED: Addresses for spamming are often collected from
contributors to newsgroups. One way of avoiding this is to set up a
"send-only" dummy e-mail account to post from: see
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/tips/tip019.html
(There is no need to keep your real first name off the post itself; in fact
if you include it, people responding will more easily remember your problem
in subsequent posts than if you use an abstract name or none at all.)
