word document just keeps loading...

My boss has a problem with a Word document he created on an older
version of WOrd that we're trying to open in Word 2004 for Mac. The
document shows up on the screen but the timer just keeps spinning
presumably until infinity. Only way I can stop it is to force quit the
whole application. We haven't been able to actually click the cursor
in the text and work on it, print it, or resave it. ANy thoughts?

Hi Jeff,

It sounds like a corrupt document. Do you have *any* version of Word
available that you can get it to open in? If so, try this: Open the
document, turn on Show/Hide formatting and copy all but the very last
paragraph mark in the document. Then open a blank, new document window and
paste. Save with a different name (you can rename it later). That should
"uncorrupt" the document and allow it to open in Word 2004.

If that doesn't work, post back.

Is it possible that the old file may contain some sort of macro that's
trying to execute on open?

Don't know that this will work, but try going into the Open dialog box,
click the file once to select it, then hold Shift while you click the Open
button.

Hi Jeff:

I think it's more likely the other two are correct. However, it "might" be
an unavailable template server that is causing the problem.

If it is, the document "will" open eventually, although it can take five to
15 minutes for this to happen. When it does, use Tools>Templates and
Add-ins to attach a template that *is* available, save it, and it will open
straight up after that.
