Word Document Map

I'm using the Word Document Map to help me navigate. I am
using Word2002 on XP if that matters. The Document Map
seems to automatically include Heading1-9 PLUS any
paragraphs with an outline level.

The problem is, Word "thinks" all my figure captions
(styled as "Caption")should have outline levels and be
included in the Document Map. But I
don't want them in. How do I solve this??

Hi Jan-Fredrik,

The Document Map seems to automatically include
Heading1-9 PLUS any paragraphs with an outline level.

That's what would make sense.

But in addition, Document Map applies outline levels as manual paragraph
formatting to short, bold paragraphs if it thinks the user might have meant
them to be headings.

The MVPs were pretty awed when they found out that this wasn't a bug, but
by design :-/

I guess you've already made sure that the "Caption" style has "Format >
Paragraph > Outline level = Body text"?

Probably you can Undo the AutoFormat that occurs when Document Map is
opened with Ctrl+Z.

If you haven't noticed in time, and AutoFormat has already done its dirty
work, you can reset the Caption paragraphs with "Find/Replace":
Find what: ((leave empty, Format > Style = Caption))
Replace with: ((leave empty, Format > Paragraph > Outline level = Body
text"

Also, make sure that you don't have "Define styles based on my formatting"
enabled in Tools | AutoCorrect| AutoFormat As You Type.
