Word document opens empty

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

Hello,
Whenever I download a file from the internet and I want to open it afterwards it opens empty, although it really isn't. I can open it with text edit without problems. Can anybody help me?

It may not be opening at all, just launching Word....try using File |
Open within Word to open it. If that works, then applying the 12.1.1
update should solve your problem.
